Patterdale MFL Curriculum

INTENT

  • The children at Patterdale understand the importance of and respect the value of speaking another language
  • They are confident in speaking and using their knowledge of the French language
  • They progress to secondary school with a strong foundation and a love of learning another Modern Foreign Language
  • They have fun whilst learning French

TEACHING MIXED AGE CLASSES

Children are taught in mixed age classes. French topics are planned on a two – cycle, to meet the requirements of the national curriculum, this is revisited twice during their time in the KS2 class, and ensures key vocabulary is taught and ensures progression. When teaching a unit, teachers use formative assessment and the Keswick School Primary French Teaching resources/ planning, to adapt their teaching, to build on solid foundations and fill any learning gaps. The ‘basics’ – number, colours etc. are repeated every year.

Children are taught and practice the four skills: Speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The children learn to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on topics which are familiar. They learn to use their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary.
