INTENT
At Patterdale, PSHE underpins our whole school values. It is at the heart of our curriculum as we believe it is important to develop the ‘whole’ child, spiritually, morally, intellectually and socially. PSHE education helps children to become responsible members of society and have a greater awareness of issues affecting the world today, such as sustainability. It teaches children how to stay safe and equips them with strategies to recognise unsafe situations and seek help when necessary. PSHE aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
We aim for pupils to:
TEACHING MIXED AGE CLASSES
Children are taught in mixed age classes. PSHE topics are planned on a 2 - 4 year cycle, to meet the requirements of the national curriculum, revisit core concepts and ensure progression. When teaching a unit, teachers use formative assessment and the 1 Decision progression of skills document, to adapt their teaching, to build on solid foundations and fill any learning gaps.
CONTENT
At Patterdale we use the 1 Decision programme for teaching PSHE, which has received the PSHE Association kitemark. The curriculum is based on three core themes:
1: Health and Wellbeing
2: Relationships
3: Living in the Wider World
Every lesson is mapped to the PSHE Association Programme of Study. The curriculum is broken down into 10 units:
Keeping/Staying Healthy
Hazard Watch
Keeping/Staying Safe
Being Responsible
Feelings and Emotions
Our World & The working World
Computer Safety
Fire Safety
First Aid
Relationships & Growing and Changing
Children explore these units year-on-year, building a toolkit of strategies and knowledge which they apply in scenario-based lessons, giving them the opportunity to ask questions and practise the skills in a safe and caring environment.
ASSESSMENT & MONITORING
1 Decisions baseline, formative, summative, and student self-assessments can be used to gauge pupils’ knowledge and understanding.
